Spring and fall

This is one of the best times of year to visit the more southerly parts of South America. You have to remember that in the southern hemisphere the seasons are reversed, so right now it's fall down there while it's spring up here.

Argentina, in particular, is lovely during the fall. The capital, Buenos Aires, is at a temperate latitude that makes it seem very similar to European or US east coast cities. It's also a very Anglicized city - for all that the Falklands War is a relatively recent moemory, you'll find polo and cricket played here, and in some quarters of the city afternoon tea seems to be served in a way it hasn't been in the northern half of the world since about 1909.

There are several things you must do if you visit Argentina, and Buenos Aires in particular. The first is tango. The national dance of Argentina has enjoyed something of a revival worldwide in recent years, though it has never fallen from fashion here. There are tango clubs all over the city for everyone from beginners to veterans. It's good fun, it's cool and - if you do it right - it's a pretty good workout, too. Check listings in local papers for special events, or book a tango class with an expert before you travel.

Argentina isn't a really great place to visit if you're a vegetarian, though you'll probably get by. The reason for this lies at the heart of the Argentine economy - beef. if you stray far from any of the country's cities it won't be very long before you find yourself in the pampas, the rolling grassland pasture that has made Argentina a byword for its beef production, and which continues to ensure that it provides some of the very finest meat in the world.

The best way to savour the local flavors is in a Buenos Aires restaurant or bistro, where you can get a delicious steak cooked to your liking and served with fries and a garnish very cheaply indeed. Just the thing to replenish those tired muscles after a long session of tangoing!
