Oh, Vienna

Vienna, Austria, is one of those capital cities that doesn't feel like a capital. That statement is not meant to be disrespectful to that august, ancient and fascinating town, but rather a testament to its quiet, restrained, civilized and altogether rather genteel atmosphere.

Everything you need to see in this city is contained within a relatively small area - the boundaries of 'The Ring' - an encircling boulevard built in the nineteenth century. Within this area you'll find all kinds of museums, including the famous treasury of the Hofburg, the central palace of the city that has served over the years as royal residence and sea of government.

If you like fun and entertainment rather than wandering around museums, check out Rathausplatz. This wide open piazza in front of the city's Rathaus (City Hall) is often used as the location for markets and live entertainment. During the summer months a giant screen is occasionally slung down the front of the building itself, on to which is projected footage of a major concert or opera. Seating is free, and the atmosphere is usualy very pleasant. If, after enjoying the music, you're feeling a little hungry or thirsty, it's only a short walk to the quaint and historic Spittelsburg district, full of cobbled streets and excellent cafés and bars.

Outside of Vienna - but easily reached via the city's excellent public transport system, there are a variety of other interesting sights to be seen. The Schonbrunn Palace is particularly interesting. For years the residence of the Hapsburg ruling house, it is now a huge museum full of fascinating exhibits about imperial Austro-Hungary and central European history. It also has very extensive gardens, including the world's oldest zoo - founded in 1752! Heading the other way of out town you can explore some of Vienna's famous wine-growing suburbs, which produce the excellent Grüaut;nerveltliner white wine, among other varieties. Close to the vineyards you'll find Beethoven's old house - this is one city that packs a lot of variety into a small area!
