Skincare on vacation

If we're health conscious, we tend to spend a lot of time eating the right foods and drinking the right drinks to keep our various internal organs ticking over properly.

But often, and especially if we're guys, we neglect our most important external organ: our skin. When you're on vacation it's pretty easy to forget that your skin can take a battering from the sun, wind, rain, cold and dirt. Not taking care of your skin can have some pretty nasty results that can range from the fatal (skin cancer) to the embarrassing (premature aging, or spots and dry patches if you're younger).

So what do we do to protect our skin? Well, if you're traveling around, and especially if you're spending time in the great outdoors or in a big city that has a lot of traffic, the first thing you're going to need to do is keep clean. Fine particles of dirt get ingrained in the skin, blocking your pores and causing spots and discomfort. When you've been out in the city for a day run the back of your hand over your cheek - it probably feels a little like sandpaper. This 'sandpaper skin' feeling is particularly common among mountain bikers and hikers, who are exposed to a lot of dust.

The best way to keep your skin clean is to use a good, mild liquid soap designed for facial use - a lot of standard bathroom soaps you find in hotels are way too harsh. You can very often find liquid soaps that contain moisturizers, though these tend to be more pricey.

On the subject of moisturizing, don't neglect it, and don't think it's just for girls! if you're going to be out in the open air a lot, and especially if you're near the salty atmosphere of the coast your skin will dry out quickly, leading to dry, unattractive, flaky patches on your face. Of course, there are a ton of moisturizers on the market, all designed and adapted for different types of skin. However, if you're stuck in the middle of nowhere and you've forgotten your brand moisturizer, just try to get hold of some olive oil and use that. Get the best extra-virgin stuff that you can find, don't use too much of it and wash off any excess with pure water. Although it can cause skin blockages and spots if used to excess, it's a great way of locking in moisture and stopping that flakiness.
