I learned tonight that my oldest son will be leaving the first of December for Afghanistan.  He will be working there for at least 2 months.  I'm very upset about this because I doubt that it will be safe for him.

When he got out of the Navy a few years ago, I thought his time in the Middle East was overwith.  Now he is going back as a civilian and I can't believe it.  I'm already worrying and he hasn't even left yet!

I'm sorry I didn't see this sooner to respond, Ozzie!  I can imagine how upset you are (truly I can, we had a deployment scare in the household earlier this year that would have been to Iraq). 

My nephew returned from Afghanistan recently (military) and learned a lot there and it wasn't really so bad at all, according to him. Is your son being sent from work, National Guard,  or is it a choice he's made on his own?

He was recently hired by a company that needed people to install security cameras in a prison in Afghanistan.  He did this by choice because the pay is very good and he had gotten behind with his finances. 

I would have thought that he had enough of the Middle East while he was in the Navy but I guess not.

I'll keep a good thought for him.  We'll try to help the next two months fly by for you.

I'm proud of your son. He showed enough courage. For sure he can take good care of himself. Be happy for your son Ozzie. He will be back safely.

I'll be thinking of your son, ozzie. I'm sure you'll be glad when his project's finished and he returns home. God speed his safe return.

Afghanistan has been in the Canadian news lately because Canadian forces have been taking a much more active role over there in recent months, although I don't know anyone stationed there personally.

Your son is really brave ozzie. Congratulation to you for that. And say my congratulation to him for finishing his works there too.

I think it's normal for a mother to worry. But my best advice is not to think too much. Just relax and pray for the safety of your son. 

Thank you everyone.  My son's departure was delayed a few weeks and he left the US on New Year's Day.  He should have arrived by now but we haven't been able to confirm that yet. 

He is a brave and very patriotic person and I'm proud of him.  I just hate worrying.  I'll have to work hard to distract myself.

Hi shinningstar.  Actually he won't be returning to the US until sometime after the middle of March.  He said it could be longer than that. 

I hear that Bush wants to send more troops to Iraq.  I guess that will mean more moms worrying about their sons.

 

I've heard that even though Bush wants more troops in Iraq, they probably won't take them from Afghanistan because they don't want to loose ground on the headway they've made there.

I haven't followed it very closely, but it looks like both parties are resisting sending more troops to Iraq.

Hey Ozzie...  How often are you able to hear from your son?  I guess there really wasn't enough time

to be able to send care packages?  I hope he can at least contact his family often.

Sorry to hear that you have this worry Ozzie. My friend's husband is a civilian contractor over there too, and he in truth he loves it. He has been there for much of the past eight years, and the pay is great. Not that it makes it any better for you, but it is a rare thing for our civilians to not come home.

Keep him in your thoughts and he will be back in no time.

I'm not familiar with the communication possibilities there.

Are you able to speak with him on the phone from time to time while he's there, ozzie?
