Re: Save money, sleep on a train!

My daughter and her 10 year old son were traveling by train from Missouri to Colorado and spent one night on the train.  Since they are both young they decided to sleep in their seats.  She said it was comfortable enough for one night but if she had to sleep on a train for more than that, she would get a sleeper compartment.

I never take a nap at train. I'm afraid of snatchers. That's why I prefer to travel daytime.

you an pay extra and actually get a bed on the train but you would better off just paying for a hotel room if you ask me. I dont see the reason why you would waste your time on a train with a area so small.

For a start, it is cheaper. Secondly, if you are making a long distance journey, then stopping in a hotel slows you down by an entire night. If you just sleep on the train, the train keeps moving and by the time you wake up you might be eight hours closer to your destination.

For people who travel a lot, or long distances it makes a lot of sense.

I guess so. I didn't really see it in that light. I use to travel alot but i figured train was so much more expensive, like you can do the same thing on the bus, its more about the comfort level.

I personally would not like to spend eight hours trying to sleep on a bus! Just the thought of eight hours of my head flopping down and waking me up, of my neck being stiff.....definately like the idea of a sleeper car far more!

wouldn't cause you to sleep harder than you want to. I wouldn't even allow myself to take medicine while traveling, you never know what may happen.

I don't think that trains with sleeper cars would just drive through stations-they don't tend to be the kind of train that makes lots of stops along the way-it's a long distance and then they make a hard stop.

If you are traveling log distance you can actually get a room on the train. Where you get a bed. It's like having a hotel room on tracks. It's kind of small but it's neat.

I looked into this for travelling to London but it works out cheaper for me to use an alternate travel method and then stay overnight in a hotel. I wish trains were cheaper in the UK. Does anyone have any experience of sleeper trains in mainland Europe?

I have but either way around, trains are expensive period. I don't think anyone has ever not paid over 200 hundred for a roundtrip ticket. I will never understand the reasons for why it's so expensive. And you are correct, even after you sleep on the train when you get where you are going, you just mght have to still get a hotel room.

Re: Save money, sleep on a train!

Yes, quite far in advance.  There generally are not that many sleeper cars on any given train and they usually book up quite quickly.  But your idea is a good one, especially if you are going a fairly long distance or don't intend to do a whole lot of sightseeing. The upside of traveling a sleeper car is that with the price that you have paid often comes your meals as well.
