In Light of Current Events... Any Climbers Here?

What's happening on Mt. Hood is so sad.  I'm not sure I can understand the drive that's needed

inside to want to do mountain climbing vacations. Have any of you done any climbing? What is it

that offers the justification for the risks involved?  (Okay, that might be a little deep for a fun travel

forum, but Oregon and Washington are popular tourist places and I got to wondering

about this.)  Is it basically the rush that would come at the summit, or the climb itself?

I'm fum of joining different outdoor activities but I don't focus more on climbing. I guess it's too dangerous for me.

    It's in Oregon as I recall--Northwest U.S. I don't know about its height.

Yes, it's in Oregon, US.  (The state above California on a map).  As far as I know, those

other two climbers have not been found.  It's a very unforgiving moutain.  Sad

It's pretty sad when climbers are lost doing something they love.  I don't know what drives people to want to climb mountains.  I do know that my son climbed Mt. Fuji in Japan several years ago and was very proud of having done it.  In that country it's considered a great feat to climb Mt. Fuji.  Even some of the elderly natives head up the mountain.  I've no idea how steep it is though.

I think I can understand the mountain climbing per se pretty much... but where it loses me is when people

start a climb knowing that it's totally icy, or knowing that a monster storm is in the forecast.   That part

    I just don't get.

If they knew it was particularly dangerous at the time they intended to do it then I don't understand why they didn't put off until it was safer, but if that's what they wanted to do then fair enough. As long as people understand the risks, and aren't putting others in danger then it's up to them what they do. I admire people with the courage and skill to have hobbies like climbing.
