    American Travelers?

There are some countries that don't exactly have wide open arms to Americans.  How receptive have you found people of the African countries to be to Americans?  I'm interested in the whole region, but particularly Egypt.  Travel

    Re: American Travelers?

i think the Egyptians would certainly welcome an American right now, but it isn't the safest place to think of going these days for anyone.  The bombings have been in tourist areas so far so they effect all tourists.  You'd probably get a nice greeting in Egypt right now than some European countries LOL.

For me, prudence just has to play a part in travel plans as long as there is conflict in the Middle East.

    Re: American Travelers?

I think recent Pope Benedict comments made it even worse.  Muslims all over the world are super angry.  Yeah, I am sure that French would not have any problems traveling anywhere in the Arab world Wink

Hehe   Well I can't argue with that, I have to assume that you're right about it.  How unfortunate!  Sad

Oh indeed those remarks, no matter what was meant by them, made world tensions worse... and I don't think they'd take a moment to find out if someone's Catholic or not... I suspect it doesn't matter any more. Crying

    Re: American Travelers?

I am saving for a trip to egpyt my freinds wife is from there and we are all going to go and visit 2008 baby. The american media some times over hypes this stuff you would be fine to travel in 99% of the country. Just like in chicago or LA or New York certain areas might not be wise to travel alone in or with out a local guide you. I cant wait to see the pyramids , 07 peru and alaska 08 egpyt

    Re: American Travelers?

LOL.  Somehow I seriously doubt that visiting Egypt would be the same as visiting Chicago or NY unless you are an Arab.

    Re: American Travelers?

I was never interested in traveling to Africa until a friend of mine (who is European by the way) traveled to Egypt with her family and sent me some photos.

The country is sooooo beautiful and surreal looking. I hope to get there before 2010.

Yes, no arguing there but still no matter how beautiful the country is, if there is a threat to your life I don't think its very wise to go.  If you want to visit beautiful countries (much much better looking then Egypt) I would suggest checking out Southeast Asia

    Re: American Travelers?

I think it's that way all the way around. I think American's are like that as well with foreigners. I think it's a global thing, we have too many barriers that keeps us separated. You look down on eachother as if we aren't humans. I don't think it will ever change.

    Re: American Travelers?

The difference is that I don't think that most tourists lives are at risk when they come to America. Where as if you go to somewhere like the Middle East-any of the Muslim countries, there really IS a risk to your life. Between the Iraq war and stupid comments made by prominent Westeners, the risk is hugely increased of late.

I think it's because of historical issues happened long time ago and even until now political issues are always a big deal. I believe in the quote "You can't really pleased everybody".

Egyptian are hospitable and friendly but most of them don't like American Policy in the Middle East.

    Re: American Travelers?

Unfortunately Shinningstar it is not just historical issues that are causing the current animosity. The issues are happening right now and the troubles are very real, the wounds very raw. American policy has caused a lot of death and destruction in these areas, and though I refrain from commenting on whether or not I feel that the policies were right, I can tell you that MANY in these regions felt that Americans had no right being there. This is why they are hostile.
