stay on the beach for free

my friend travelled to Hawaii and somehow managed to build some sort of tent for himself and slept on the beach for a couple of months, thereby not paying any hotel fees. It takes quite a ruffian to do something this daring and spontaneous but that is my friend and he had great success. According to him you are allowed to live on the beach for a certain amount of days before they kick you off.

That's an interesting and money-saving way to do it. Sounds like fun.

I suppose it's just the same as camping. Some parts of Europe you can camp for free, in the wilder and more remote parts of the countryside.

They actually allow that?  I don't think it's legal with many beaches... at least in the United States and the locations I've been to.  They make sure the beaches are cleared off between sundown and sunrise.

Was he camping in an isolated area or on a private beach that allows campers? I can't imagine this happening on Maui or Oahu.

THat is awesome if you are just there for a couple weeks and are used to camping and roughing it.  What cooler way to really see Hawaii.  Does anyone here know of any spots in specific where this is allowed?
