    Re: Disease?

I'm not certain what the current requirements are specifally these days, but, yes, there are required innoculations for Africa.  You'll get a yellow piece of paper which is kept in your passport that lists them, and the paper is actually looked at in some countries.  It used to be thypoid, small pox, gamma globulin, and maybe one other.  Also, if you are travelling outside cities much, you'll be put on a course of malaria preventative which is important to follow through on.

There's also a time period before travel that you need the shots done, so they are in effect when you go, and the malaria medicine is started a couple of weeks before you go and you continue it for a while once you're back.

    Re: Disease?

definitely discuss this with the doctor before you leave as well as the embassy in the country where you're going!

and avoid the ice cubes ! Everyone thinks about the water, but no one thinks about the ice!

    *chuckles*

I mean in the drinks - everyone knows not to drink the water, but how many people order a mixed drink or a soda and then have ice in the glass? And what's the ice made out of?

    ;)

    Re: Disease?

Its important to think abuot disease no matter where you travel. Different countries have different ailments, you should always see what you need to be immunized for before travel.

    Re: Disease?

That's really smart.  I can honestly say that, while it's been drilled into my head not to drink the water in many foreign countries, you never hear warnings about the ice cubes, and yet it's so obvious.  I wonder how many people get caught by that little slip up?  Hehe

    Re: Disease?

exactly - people always joke about having an alcoholic drink to avoid drinking the water, but then they have a few ice cubes popped into it... d'oh!

gotta go for the bottled water or drink only beer or booze NOT on the rocks...

    Re: Disease?

I did ...once!  I think I succumbed to ice cubes because it was on an airline...albeit Air India.  We sat on the runway in Bombay for almost four hours on a really hot day, the soft drinks weren't chilled and I had ice.  I paid for it, not with tourista stomach, but with parasites which took months to get under control!

    No ice!!!!

    Re: Disease?

Ohhh ewww!  Poor you, Vicky!!! *hugs*  That would have to be an incredible nightmare!  We don't ever think of stuff like parasites either... yet we worm our dogs and cats, religiously, hehe.

I'm definately going to have to let my mother know this, because she does a great deal of traveling.  Thank you!

    Re: Disease?

I'm never drinking water anywhere but at home again.  Oh no!  I'm sure many a fine vacation has been ruined by a  few bad ice-cubes.  Maybe people thought freezing would kill the bacteria?

sorry about your vacation being all messed up with that, Vic... I guess peopel just don't think about the water in solid form and all that.

warm pop is better than cold with ice!
