    Travel Insurance

Having known the benefits and importance of getting a travel insurance, yet I still know of some people who don't get themselves any insurance.  What do you think are some of their reasons for doing so?

Its an added cost. When you look at how much your spending on your vacation, adding more cost is usually a turn off, people think "nothing will happen to me"

    Re: Travel Insurance

You know, when I do big trips (Europe, cruises), I get travel insurance, but when it's a trip that means just a flight to get me to and from a particular destination I don't get it,  If a flight is canceled or delayed, it's a matter of a phone call to the friend or family member telling them what flight I will be on. When it's a canceld flight, the airline has to get me there somehow, and they always have. If I have to cancel, I can either work woth the airline or eat the cost o the tickets. But that's just me. I wouldn't dream of not having it on big trips. It covers so much, and I have had to use it a couple of times.

    Re: Travel Insurance

We've never gotten travel insurance, but then again, we haven't had the opportunity to travel extensively until now.  I've heard of this, and many people swear it's a must while others say it's just throwing money away.  Are there certain cases where we should have it regardless, for instance if we're traveling out of the country?

    Re: Travel Insurance

if you travel internationally, I'd suggest you get it to be covered - locally, not worth the trouble, imo.

Yes, Thumper is absolutely correct.  You could buy travel insurance for a domestic trip but IMO that would be a waste of money.

    Re: Travel Insurance

One thing to keep in mind when getting travel insurance is to look for what it covers. For a crusie, you want it to cover medical and air evacuatioin, it also helps if your policy covers theft. I've made claims for medical (once on a ship, once because I was stuck in Lisbon four extra days because I got sick) and once for theft -- our car was broken into when we were in Israel and some of our belongings, which we had hidden, were stolen. The insurance helped to replace what was stolen.

true - always read the small print and make sure you understand... because it's YOU that'll  have to deal with it when the emergency's going on, not the insurance agent!

Is is nessasary to get the insurance all the time?

I know that a lot of people say that you should always get insurance, but if you are just taking a short trip is it really nessasary?  What does everyone think?

The discussion in this thread is very informative.

Thanks to all of those who participate.

My conclusion, best to get insurance for international travel and not really very important for domestic.

I don't bother if I am travelling within Canada, as my provincial health insurance is portable across the country.

Out of country? I always buy health insurance.

I've never bothered with trip insurance.

even a small trip can be a problem - it really depends on your own physical condition and how much risk you think you may be in.

but internationally - always get extra!

I've never used traveller's insurance, but then I've never been out of the country, either.

    Re: Travel Insurance

It depends.  If you are taking any of your gadgets and gizmo's such as digital camera or laptop, and they aren't insured on your other policies if taken out of the house (or taken on planes etc), then you should get insurance to cover these for the trip.  Things get broken in transit, things get stolen.

If you are insuring specific items, make sure you take a photo of the item before you go and also have any receipts, paperwork etc to prove ownership of the item later if you do need to make a claim.

I know it can really save you a bundle, but I can't say I've ever purchased it.
