    Water Issues

A close friend went to Mexico about two months ago and came back with the worst um, stomach problems.  She said it must have been the water down there.  I've heard that before, but is it really still an issue?  Wouldn't the government have regulated it by now?

I think it is still an issue in Mexico but the government is working hard on it. Recently the 4th World Water Forum Concludes in Mexico City which has several good conclusions on the on-goin projects.

Each country has bacteria that is unique (in a sense) to thier enviornment.  The bacteria can be adapted to, obviously because the Mexicans do not suffer the same, um, symptoms as we do.  Because we do not live with those bacteria all the time, it is best to drink as much bottled water as you can.

    Re: Water Issues

no bottled sodas either, they use local water at the bottling plants!  most people don't know this and think they are doing well to grab a coke.  wrong!  Just stick to water and beer and you will be fine!

    Re: Water Issues

Yes, there is a water problem around the world as well as mexico. I'll just tell you what my teacher told me once, a couple million children that live in poverty die everyday. From what? From dirty water. You think you got it bad from stomach aches and that diarrhea from one cup of bad water. But these kids, a couple minutes of diarrhea..their dead. So you gotta watch what water you drink when your in a place other then america. Man, its a sad world :(

take water recomendations seriously, but with a grain of salt.  your friend could also be experiencing food poisoning from under-cooked food, alcohol withdrawal/over-indulgence, or the simple dangers of having a little too much fun of the socially unacceptable to admit to variety.  the previous poster is absolutely right about particular bacteria in the water of particular places, but unless you're prone to illness or gastrointestinal issues, don't worry too much about drinking coke.  if you're gonna go that far, you need to not eat anything that hasn't been boiled either.  as most utensils and uncooked foods are rinsed in that self-same water.  or brush your teeth with anything other than bottled water.  or take a shower, as you might get some water in your mouth or ears, etc.  really, unless there's a water warning issued for the area, if you're going to be that picky, you might consider only traveling to 1st world nations.  most younger travelers are more likely to give themselves diahrrea from drinking too much, than from drinking local coke.

(ps- coke produced in mexico is made with real sugar rather than high fructose corn syrup -which makes it less carcinogenic!  it sells like hotcakes in US border cities in the southwest as a result.)

My mother who was a travel agent for years always advised her clients not to drink the water. Everytime I went I didn't. I would not suggest drinking it.

    Re: Water Issues

I would listen to that old piece of advice.  When we were in Mexico we only drank bottled water.  The resort stocked bottled water in the mini refrigerator in our room.  We even used the bottled water to brush our teeth.  I was pregnant at the time and had just gotten over my morning sickness so I didn't want to take any chances of getting a stomach bug while were there.  I also made sure I didn't get any of the water in my mouth when I showered.  I'd rather be safe than sorry!  And speaking of the soda in Mexico, it does taste different that what we're used to.  We didn't care for it much mainly because it didn't taste the same.  Just a personal preference!
