    Hawaiian islands

When I visited Hawaii long ago I went to Oahu and Maui.  What islands do you think are the best to visit?  What are the differences?  This would be very helpful in planning what will hopefully be a future vacation.

    Re: Hawaiian islands

I've been dying to go to Hawaii for a long time, so I'd like to know the same thing.

Also, when's the best time of year to visit Hawaii? I don't want it to be raining throughout my stay. I really want to have the perfect Hawaiian experience, and that would put a real damper on things.

Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

    Re: Hawaiian islands

From what I understand, the best times to visit Hawaii would be the end of spring April/May and the beginning of Fall Sept/Oct. I hear winter is very cold and rainy there during and of course during the Summer everyone is visiting Hawaii so it is very busy and the cost of travel is much higher.

    Re: Hawaiian islands

When I went to Hawaii, I went to Oahu. Maui, and Kwai.  If you don't like lounging around don't go to Kwai or only stay a couple of days.  It's beautiful but there's not much to do.  Oahu is a busy place but has such great landmarks like Pearl Harbor, it was well worth the visit.  Maui is awesome.  Not half the hustle and bustle of Oahu but a lot more to do than Kwai.

We'll be going to Maui soon. Can you recommend any really interesting things to do beyond the typical shopping-and-snorkeling thing? Any "don't miss" stuff, or things the locals know about that the tourists don't?

    Hi!

Aside from the usual activities of a 'vacation', you might like to learn some of the Hawaiian languages which are not English, most of them creole/pidgin and the real Hawaiian language. If you like, refer to this site:  http://www.hawaiischoolreports.com/language.htm.

Hope it helps you a bit!  :)

    Happy trip!!

Geline, what a wonderful idea! (And one I ought to have thought of myself, silly me--!) I'll be sure to check out your website recommendation.

I didn't know about creole/pidgen--is that a mash-up of English and Hawaiian, or something entirely else?

    Thank you!

    Re: Hawaiian islands

I'm addicted to wanting to see more of Hawaii after the Lost series.  I love that show, and it looks so gorgeous!  It would be really neat to go over there and be able to see the set :)  I would also want to go to whichever island had the most interesting folklore/tales about it too.  I love stuff like that.

One thing I would like to do is visit--respectfully, of course--some of the shrines and sacred places. I recently read a lovely article in ... some New Age niche magazine, I forget which ... about doing that. I plan on doing some research along those lines. And also doing a lot of walking between then and now so I can do a bit of backpacking maybe.

The hawaiian islands look to me like the most beautiful islands in the entire world

    Re: Hawaiian islands

All of the Hawaiin Islands are beautiful.  I have only been to Oahu and Maui.  That was two totally different experiences.  In Oahu I felt like I was back in the city, lots of sky rise hotels and buildings and lots of traffic.  While Maui on the other hand seemed a bit more laid back and naturistic.  I would like to visit Kauai next.  It looks like one of the most exotic places on earth.
