    Food

Is the food available in Hawaii just like it is in the rest of the US, or are their general menu differences like going to other tropical areas?

I found some very good restarurants in Hawaii and their seafood is excellent.  Just visit Zagat and you will find all of them.

    Re: Food

generally speaking you can get burgers and fries, just like anywhere.  but if you want to be more adventurous go to mcdonalds and order spam! *L* its on the menu with rice.  a local favorite.  the seafood is indeed great, there is a nice selection of breads and its traditional to roast a pig in a fire pit.  in other words, you can be adventursome if you want to.

    Re: Food

I did notice they had Spam everywhere! LOL.  As far as the food we got, I wasn't impressed with their steak choices as they were very limited (one tour guide joked that there is only one cow on each island, which is why milk and steak are so expensive), and I'm allergic to most seafood, but I still had plenty of menu options and everything was wonderful.  ESPECIALLY the fruit!!

    Re: Food

Okay, Hawaii does not exactly seem like a place to go for the best or widest selections of steaks(beef). That's like going to the Yukon for pink shrimp.

I live in LA but there is a hawaiian restaurant arounf the block from me so I have to make do with that!

    Re: Food

Has anyone ever tried poi?  I can't remember what they said it was made from, something (a tree maybe?) that grows naturally on the islands.  Everywhere we went they said it was a staple of the native Hawaiian diet.  When I tasted it it tasted like glue.  Don't know how they eat that stuff!!

    Re: Food

Poi's made from the taro root, and like a lot of things, is an acquired taste!

    Re: Food

LOL! That's exactly what poi tastes like - glue! What a hoot - although we did try some that had been 'spiced up' somehow and it was actually palatable.

If you're a coffee drinker, you HAVE to try Kona coffee in Hawaii. You can get it here of course, but there's something about enjoying a cuppa while the waves are rolling in ... okay, maybe it has less to do with the coffee itself, and more to do with the setting. Heehee.

The fruit is amazing - but don't overindulge unless you want to spend the rest of your vacation in the washroom!

They make spam burgers? I think I will stick with the Big Mac.

    Re: Food

Spam is super popular in hawaii--actually it's popular all over Asia. In Korea it's considered a "gourmet" item.

    Re: Food

I had no idea that spam was popular in Hawaii! Spam makes me think of that Monty Python song, "Spam, Wonderful Spam".

I live in England, and I would say that spam is not popular here.

    Re: Food

Its popularity is one of life's little mysteries. I believe American GI's introduced it to Asia post World War II and Korea.

    AFAIC, I'd rather eat dirt.

LOL! Yes, anything has to be better than spam!
