I was a small child when my dad was stationed in Germany.  I have some fond memories and have always wanted to return to Germany.  Most of what I remember are those things that would impress a 4 year old.....beautiful dolls, music boxes, palaces and food. 

Has anyone here been vacationing in Germany?

My first time here, I am also impressed by visiting to the old palaces here in Germany.  It is so fantastic experiencing or just even seeing the old palaces located at the top of the high mountains.

I am also impressed by their sausages.  It taste so delicious.

I love the people too, because they are very friendly.  Everytime you are walking at the street, they greeted and smile.  It is a great feeling being welcomed.

I was so glad to read your reply.  I'd love to hear more about your visit in Germany.  I have some pictures of places we went but I don't remember going to them, as I was too young.  One place in particular was Hitler's hideout on top of a mountain, I think.  We have a picture of my sister and I standing in front of a big fireplace there.

I have a lot of ancestry there, so it's a place I really want to visit someday. I'm not sure what part

of the country I'll see, but I hope it comes complete with some of the castles!

You can find anywhere in this country the old castles.  Actually, I live in the southern part of Germany and I have already visited many old castles.  They are located at the top of the mountain where you can see the houses under all over.

I have 3 most memorable moments of Germany,
1.  Airport security... Before 9/11, it was amazingly secure... Individual searches of each and every passenger, coming and going.

2.  One time I arrived with colleagues on a business trip at our hotel.  I was immediately singled out and rushed to the front of the check-in line by a hotel manager speaking German, which I don't understand.  I was given a room without being asked for ID or anything.  One thing led to another and I finally got to speak with an english-speaking employee.  It turns out I look EXACTLY like one of their regular guests who gets the royal treatment.  When they realized I wasn't him, I was immediately sent back to the end of the line.

3.  Finally, my best memory was in Hamburg.  There is a church in Hamburg that is the highest point in the city.  Again on a business trip, our host arranged to have us go to the top of the church at night to see the entire city lit up.  It was chilly, and he was prepared with hot apple cider.  It was wonderful.

This sounds so wonderful!  I think it would be incredible to see some of them and I'd be taking *so* many pictures!    Schatzi, which towns would you recommend for tourists that would have plenty to do but also castles to see? 

I'm a little bit jealous to all of you. I like to visit palaces and castles too just like in fairy tales. I guess I don't have a chance to visit Germany. Would you mind to post your nice shots of castles?

I used to visit Germany quite often when I was living in Switzerland. The best thing I can remember about that place is the Christmas market. It becomes absolutely marvelous during Christmastime... the shops are all decorated with dolls and colorful chocolate boxes, etc. Also missing the sausages. They have hundreds of different kinds ;)

Not yet, but I would love to visit and take a cruise down the Rhine stopping at all the castles.  Would be wonderful. 

I've never been to Germany, but I have some friends from there and it sounds beautiful. I'd also be interested to visit the country, because I'm of German descent on both sides of my parent's families.

I also would be very interested in the history of some of the German composers like J S Bach.
