    New e-Coli Scares :-(

It used to be that e-Coli was a concern (at least in my eyes) when places were dirty or didn't bother to finish cooking meat.  It felt rather safe to just look for a clean place.  But gosh, with the way all the produce is shipped in and is causing a problem recently, the cleanest restaurant on the planet can have scallions or lettuce with the bacteria and never even know it.  I find that highly disturbing.  Crying

The problem is that nobody cares and producers are looking to cut costs.  At the end we suffer because of this.  IMO farms should be penalized appropriately.  Lets say revoke license and not allow to sell for 1 month on a first offence and close down the farm altogether on a 2nd one.  But unfortunately this will never happen and we will continue to suffer. Yes... in the meantime, the only way to make that happen would be a hit in the economy maybe, and

that would only happen if consumers stopped eating out.  Fat chance.  Sad   And something else...

I have to assume that it's happening all the time with all kinds of restaurants and only the Taco

Bells and other "biggies" get all over the news.

I heard one news report that said something like 3% of produce was checked for ecoli and other things before being allowed to be transported across the states.  That seems to me like a very small percentage.

Scary indeed, but the truth of the matter is that restaurants may not be at fault. It's hardly Taco Bell's fault if the lettuce they buy has the stuff on it, because other than nearly destroying the lettuce by scrubbing, or soaking it in a chlorine bath (which supposedly is done already by the growers) you won't get rid of e-coli. Its a really resistant bug.

The best thing you can do is keep healthy and your immune system strong.

Why haven't food companies learned :(  Every few years we have some form of food related scare, and it's almost always down to someone not doing something properly.  I've already cut out fast food places and so have most of my friends because of their dodgy practices - we're now eating at chains that buy organic / fairtrade / ethical produce.  I just hope those companies will keep to a high standard!

Getting e-coli is not a fun thing at all.  I got sick with the spinach scare a while back and I ate it in a clean looking place, that I eat at regularly.  You can definitely tell when you have it, there is no mistaking by how violently ill you get really quickly.  The only thing I learned from it is you can get it anywhere at anytime.
