    Worst food experience

I'm just curious as to what was the worst thing you ever tried to eat on your travels, and why it was so bad. What country was it, was it a restaurant, street stand etc?

I've not fared badly and actually have nothing to report. But my poor younger sister had a rough time the first time she ate Greek-she almost vomitted when she bit into a piece of gravel in a dolmades. It wasn't the restaurants doing-the bag of rice had apparently come like that and a bunch were recalled, however it could be said that they should have NOTICED a 3cm stone in their rice!

The worst food I've eaten during my previous travel was soup in Thailand. It was totally spicy. I just tasted it and never ordered it again. I hate too spicy food.

Interesting.  Thai is definitely my favorite food, at least what they call Thai food in western restaurants. Up until now I don't think I have yet encountered what I would call "worst food".  I would never eat sea cucumber, that's for sure Wink

I say I would try anything once, but these dudes sure are ugly! The Japanese will eat anything it seems.

I think you mean Chinese.  Because of overpopulation they have problems with food.   I actually like sushi and seafood.

I did mean Japan. Sea cucumber is considered a delicacy in Malaysia, Indonisia, Japan and China, according to Wikipedia. But the Japanese are the ones with all the raw, poisonous if you don't cut it right, type food. Which I just find crazy!

But I can see why China would have problems, and would be more open to eating fairly unpalatable things.

    Re: Worst food experience

You are right about that.  They do cook and eat poisonous fishes and stuff like that.  I just remembered I saw it on Discovery (or similar channel) not too long ago. Cooks have to graduate from some special school before they can open a restaurant. To tell you the truth I am a big fan of Japanese people and culture so I might be willing to try something out of the ordinary when I visit Japan in the future.  But definitely not sea cucumber LOL

I don't have anything personal to report, *but* I have a friend who luckily noticed

crushed glass in a salad at a street cafe.  I know it would be a stronger answer if

I'd remember where it was, but I can't.  Sad  I'm thinking it was India or Egypt,

though.  Not the best thing to remember when I want to plan a trip there asap!

    Re: Worst food experience

To Faremax; I have a curiosity about the Japanese people, but I fear mixing with them because of their views and opinions of us. The fact for instance that they all believe that we smell really bad because of eating red meat. I fear offending someone because I simply was unaware of their very particular customs regarding where to take off ones shoes when entering a house.

To Destiny; I think that glass in food is a risk in any country, world wide. We frequently see stories in the paper about a bag of this or a jar of baby food that, containing glass, or a sliver of metal. It scares me enough that I choose to cook 95% of our food from raw ingredients myself-not even using prepared spaghetti sauce and that kind of thing.

LOL, this is the first time I've heard something like that and that sounds pretty funny.  I can assure you that this a myth.  Sorry to get off-topic here

I had no idea, truly! Even some of the most academic channels have repeated this myth on shows. I've created a thread to discuss myths such as this some more.

    Re: Worst food experience

My worst food experience was when I was a small child of about four and it was on an airplane.   I don't even know what the food item was other than it was a purple color similar to beets or cranberry sauce but it wasn't either of them.  I was sick at my stomach for the rest of the day!

    Re: Worst food experience

I've eatenn frog, just not a sweet and sour one. I did so knowingly at a time when I was experimenting. That time included such things as conga eel, crocodile, springbok, kangaroo, various and sundry shelled fish such as oysters..... and surprisingly I never found anything that I wouldn't eat again.
