South africa is the better half of africa right? I want to go but im not sure which one is the better area to go to.

There are some nice places in South Afirce, abut I am not sure that I would say it is all that wonderful. Crime is still rife almost everywhere and the conditions can be very bad. Stick with the big tourist cities and you'll do fine, just don't decide to take a side trip all by yourself.

My friend lives in Pretoria, and has no problems in day to day life, but tells me often of stabbings nearby.

This is important now no matter where we travel.  In the past I would have felt comfortable taking those side trips in most countries, but not any longer.

It is important when it comes to travel anywhere but Africa more importantly. Because right now Africa is a fertile ground for murder. There are thousands of people being killed every day, including children. I want to go but at this time I'm not going to make it my priority.
