    Cheapest Company

During the planning of your past trips, have you researched the insurance company you went with, or just gone with who was recommended? If you researched, did you choose the cheapest company or the one with the best coverage, or a combination of factors?

I prefer a combination of factors. There are some cheaper travel companies who provide a good service. But I'm more tempted to travel if there's a company recommended by my close friends.

I think you should always go with a referrel. That means that if someone close to you is using it and they give you a good review then it must be worth your time.

Except that even then you cannot guarantee that the person you were referred by has any sense! Some people just don't see what's really happening. Also, they may have thought the service good because they didn't have to USE it. It might be a completely different story if you have to make a claim.

I use the Moneysupermarket site to compare travel and other insurance costs - it's handy as long as you aren't after anything fancy.

Most of my friends just use the travel insurance they get with their bank accounts.

I'm frugal in a lot of things and I save where I can, but there are some things that I don't feel right shopping "cheap" for.. insurance for something like this is one that I want the better coverage because if they're too cheap, a lot of them will give you a terrible headache if you have to file a claim.  I'd rather go with a known name for travel insurance.

What wrong with shopping for cheap insurnace? I'm not sure I understand. Is it because you won't get the best coverage if something happens?
