In the UK we call it Daylight Saving Time - in the spring, the clocks go forward an hour, and in the autumn they go back an hour - it effectively moves an hour of sunlight from the morning to the evening so that summer nights are longer.

The theory behind it is that having more of the daylight hours during the working day (and hence the time when roads are busiest) reduces accidents and helps people cope. Statistics have shown however that the change causes an INCREASE in accidents, and has led to places like Scotland getting rid of the system.
