How Many Week's Vacation Per Year?

There is a HUGE difference in vacation/holiday allowances between the US and UK. In the UK at my last job, I had 21 days paid vacation per year, plus the seven manditory/bank holidays. That's a full 28 days, increasing by one day per year employment with most companies.

Then I come here to find 7 days vacation, and nothing else. Increasing, yes, by one day per year-but it's no wonder that American's suffer stress so bad. You need more time off!

You're situation is better than mine. I only have 15 days paid vacation and 5 days holiday. My employer is a little bit rude. Other companies here used to give 1 month paid vacation per year.

Is there a rule in your country regarding vacation time? That is why the UK is so good-the EU and British government set the rules-here in the US, the government is too capitalistic to care about the state and health of the workers.

Wow, I had no idea you got so little vacation time in the USA!  Does that mean you literally have christmas, new year, easter, and thanksgiving off, and then are virtually out of holiday time?

I'm going to stop complaining about the UK now - it seems we do have it good in some ways!

Re: How Many Week's Vacation Per Year?

There are federal holisdays that everyone gets. However, they don't have boxing day like at home, just Christmas day and then back to work on the 26th! Not even time to recover from the food and hangover.... There are several single day holidays that I think amount to no more than 7 days in a year. So the average person starting in a company would get a total of 14 days holiday per year-half of the UK allotment.
