It seems that many, if not all airlines will offer you a discount on your flight if you have a bereavement in your immediate family. You have to prove it of course-showing either a death certificate or other proof that your family member is in hospital in a serious condition.

I've never had to apply for this discount/rebate, but was wondering-how often do airlines honour this?

Its offered as often as their airline tickets are offered,lol. If you have a flight and it deals with death and or a sick person, then you will get the discount. They don't pick and chhose. If you can prove it then you get the discount.

I hadn't heard of this discount before, but I think that's a really nice thing for airlines to do.  Nobody wants to be in that situation, and I think it will be a massive help to families that need to travel for that reason.  Is it a worldwide thing, or just something offered by American airlines?

I believe that I have read of it in both the Continental airlines website and British Airways, but I cannot be sure for any other airlines. I would imagine if Continental do it then a bunch of other American ones do it too, but there are fewer British airlines and so the lack of competition might not have driven them to do it.

I have had people tell me this was available before but I have never been able to get a discount.  One time I really needed it as I had a family member die very suddenly and I had just paid my college tuition.  Ended up driving the entire way with a friend because a last minute ticket was way to much for me at the time.

That's interesting. I've never heard of that before, unless it was part of a cancellation clause in a trip insurance package that we bought.
