When you buy your travel insurance what is normally your deductible for things like medical treatment and lost luggage? Do you have to pay for your treatment out of pocket, or is there a way to contact the company and so avoid out of pocket payment? I am always afraid of not being able to afford upfront payment as I don't have a credit card.

How do you handle this?

My current policy provides a phone number so that if you can't afford treatment they can arrange it for you. That policy is pretty expensive though, and I may have to cancel it soon.

The policy I had before was a cheap annual multi-trip one, and you were expected to pay up front and be reimbursed once you got home.

The last time I had a travel emergency I got a friend back home to wire me some money - that's the only way round the problem that I can see :(

my deductible is either paid up front or in increments of monthly payments. If you don't pay up front then you won't be able to utilize your insurance until it is paide. So it took me about 6 months to be able to use my insurance. It's all depends on what insurance you go with some.

Randle, I feel kinda lost after your response.  I was under the impression that deductible is what you have to pay when you file a claim.  Basically it's your out of pocket expense.  The lower the deductible the more expensive policy usually is.  Could you care elaborate more about your statement?

I guess I should have made this two seperaate topics and that way it might have been a little more clear. So for now, lets just keep it to; what is your normal deductible. That is, how much money do you have to pay for treatment before your insurance company pays any-like with car insurance you pay say, the first $200 for repairs and the company pays anything above that rate.

People usually purchase travel insurance to protect them if they are not able to take the trip. It is an extra fee that is paid to ensure that they will get their money back if they are not able to go on the trip. It also provides coverage for different things too but it may vary depending on the airline. Always look at the policy to make sure it meets your needs.

I thought travel insurance was also for if something happens on that trip and you need to recover from lost money or items?
