hotels - what do you look for when booking one?

We all know that first impressions are key when we are going to a job interview or meeting new people, but how about when you are booking a hotel room? Do you talk to others about it to see what their experience was?  Do you pick a 'tried and true' name?  Is cost a big factor?  What do you look for?  What attracts you to stay at a certain hotel?

Usually the first thing i look at is the hotels location.  After that I check reviews to make sure the place is clean and customers don't find any surprises in their hotel rooms.  I like nice service with nice rooms.  I keep my place looking good and if I am going to pay you to stay in yours it better to be even nicer.

I look at the cost, and whether or not it is on the beach. Then I want to know how close it is to where all the action is.

I use to look at the price but I since purchased a membership that allows me to stay at hotels for around half the price sometimes less and most of them are 4 or 5 star, I know look how far away from the beach the place is before I book.
