How Do You Deal With Jet Lag?

I don't travel a whole lot, but I wonder how people that do, deal with the time changes in accordance to their bodies?  Do you take anything to help you sleep?  I have been taking the herb Melatonin for other sleep issues, but I have heard that this is also good for jet lag.

What does everyone else do?  Here are some pointers that I have come accross:

    - avoid alcohol and caffene before and during the flight as they can cause you to become dehydrated. Drink plenty of fluids!

    - reset the time to the time zone that you will be travelling to so that you body can adjust (if you are trying to sleep, darken your area by wearing a hoodie or the like.)

    - walk around and get some exercise.  Also you will want to consider wearing comfortable clothing to allow for this.

If the time zone is much different than yours, you may want to consider arriving a few days ahead (especially if you are taking part in business.)

    Have a nice flight!

I take a shower and hit the city right after I arrive, as long as its during the day.  Sometimes, if the hotel has a gym I will head in there for a workout and then go out to eat.

I also try to take things with me that help me sleep, my comfy pjs, a really boring book that I haven't been able to get through, a sappy romance movie that will make me cry and get me tired. Things like that get me comfortable and in a sleepy mood.

My routine's pretty much the same. Taking a shower and having a good meal help me a lot. I don't really resort to the workout method, though.

I take comfy clothes and a book to read because the two combined will usually get me to sleep. For me, any book will do - it doesn't necessarily have to be boring.

Oh, and definitely no caffeine. Wink

Well that's interesting. I don't think I have ever actually experienced jet lag. From what I hear here, it sounds like it's a lot different than sea sickness.

I try to relax, catch up on my sleep, stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water and if I'm tempted to have a caffeine beverage I think tea would be a better choice than coffee. Better yet, I may have a green or white tea.

I have never done much traveling outside of the US, and my travel inside has been only a couple of hours away. I have threfore not had much of a problem with jet lag.
