Destiny, rice vinegar is what holds the rice together. I do roll my own sushi sometimes, but I get impatient too fast as the process is very slow. My suggestion is to visit local Chinese supermarket where you will find all the supplies you will ever need. Rolling mat (preferably bamboo), rice vinegar (sushi vinegar), rice, nori (seaweed), wasabi and pickled ginger. This should get you rolling

I use rice cooker but it's not a necessity. Most important in sushi rolling is rice preparation.
