    Re: Japan Sushi

I remembered my Chinese friend who really hates eating sushi. I even bet $100 bucks. If she can eat sushi, I'll win $200. Unfortunately, I lost $100. My friend was our laughing stuff in Japanese restaurant.

    Re: Japan Sushi

I love sushi but I have never tried really authentic stuff, as in by going to Asia. I've eaten in US and UK sushi restaurants and always have love it, but I guess I would like to try the real thing some day rather than the Westernised.

    Re: Japan Sushi

    From Wikipedia;

In Japanese culture, Sushi is a food made of vinegared rice combined with various toppings or fillings, especially seafood but also vegetables, mushrooms, eggs, or meat. Most, but not all, fish used in sushi is raw; other ingredients may be cooked, blanched, or marinated.

It comes as a little black wrapped roll.

    shinningstar:
Good to hear that you like sushi Destiny. I have a friend who don't like the taste of it. I'm planning to make my own sushi. I hae the complete recipe from a friend. I hope I'll get it right.

Were you able to give this a try, shinningstar?  If so, did you find that it was easy to keep the rice together?  I have heard that that's the worse part, getting the rice right.  The place where I get my sushi has started making more varieties of it and I'm loving it!

    Re: Japan Sushi

At my first try, it was difficult to keep the rice together but I got it perfect on my second try. It's very important to measure all your ingredients carefully inorder to have a perfect sushi.

    Re: Japan Sushi

Destiny, rice vinegar is what holds the rice together.  I do roll my own sushi sometimes, but I get impatient too fast as the process is very slow. My suggestion is to visit local Chinese supermarket where you will find all the supplies you will ever need.  Rolling mat (preferably bamboo), rice vinegar (sushi vinegar), rice, nori (seaweed), wasabi and pickled ginger.  This should get you rolling Big Smile I use rice cooker but it's not a necessity. Most important in sushi rolling is rice preparation.  Here you can find a pretty good recipe. Enjoy

    Re: Japan Sushi

With a toddler around there is no way I could keep the equipment from being thrown on the floor, or find time to do it! In the UK Marks and Spencer used to have an excellent range of pre made sushi, came boxed with all the extras that you might want to put on it. For someone who is short on time and without a good restaurant nearby, it can be a convenient way to try it.

    Re: Japan Sushi

Does anyone have any tips for converting non-sushi eaters. I like sushi, but I can't persuade any of my friends to try it - they seem to think that because I only eat fish and no other meat I'm some freak that's had my tastebuds removed, and they won't listen to my recommendations :(

    Re: Japan Sushi

I go to sushi places occasionally. They're definitely not my favorite, but can be delightful from time to time. But I've never been to Japan so maybe I've never tasted proper sushi before.
