    Traveller's Checks?

I'm not sure if this is the right area for this, but I was wondering if you use traveller's checks?

I use American Express checks and I have had to be reimbursed once after losing a check. Has anyone used another company?

I've never used travelers checks even though I have American Express.  What do you see as the advantage of using travelers checks as opposed to credit cards?  We've always used a combination of credit cards and cash when we've traveled.

    Re: Traveller's Checks?

My mom told me when I took my first vacation at 13 to always take traveler's checks when traveling and I always have. It's the same as cash but more like "insured cash" because it's replaceable, unlike actual cash. It was part of the pre-vacation ritual: pedicure, manicure, hair stylist, dry cleaner's, bank for traveler's checks.

wouldn't you just love to beeeeeeeeeee me? "-)

    Re: Traveller's Checks?

My aunt prefer to have a traveller's check because she's afraid of bringing cash. She uses American Express travellers checks. There is always an American Express office in every city. The best reason to use travellers checks is that you can cash just what you think you will be using that day. It helps you prevent being a victim of snatchers and pickpocketers on the subway in Rome.

    Re: Traveller's Checks?

I always, always ttake travellers cheques. I think mine were visa, and though I never had to have one replaced, the peace of mind was always nice-knowing that I wouldn't get stuck in a foreign country without and money and with no way of helping myself.

    Re: Traveller's Checks?

I have used them in the past, but find them sometimes to be an inconvenience.  Not all stores seem willing to cash them for you and of course you cannot cash them at a financial institution if you do not have an account there either, so sometimes it is difficult to use them.  But I suppose using them is still safer than actually carrying a great load of cash with you.

    Re: Traveller's Checks?

I used to use them often a long time ago but not so much anymore.  If I do get them it is going to be as an emergency stash of money but kept put away in case of an emergency.  They are too hard to transfer and nobody takes them as they are.  When I was in costa rica once I actually got stuck with them when the teller said my signature wasn't identical and wouldn't accept them.  Then I couldn't cash them in anywhere else.
