    Shanghai Surprise

With so many destinations describing themselves as the 'Paris of wherever', or the 'Jewel of the somewhere' it's refreshing to find a city that can sell itself as the 'whore of the Orient'! Less than a hundred years ago, Shanghai was parceled out among foreign powers as the West discovered China. Today it's the world's largest construction site – you can virtually fling open your hotel curtains to a new skyline each morning. Catch historical Shanghai while you can - it's literally vanishing overnight as the past is bulldozed to make way for the future.

For a second, my big fear was that this thread was going to be about that old Sean Penn/Madonna film.

    Re: Shanghai Surprise

China is becomming a world power to be reconed with.  its too bad that the advancing of their culture is so dramatically eroding their history.  if you need further examples of the eradication of the history of the Chinese people, go to ebay and look for human skulls, ornaments and artifacts.  its untenable the rate at which this society is selling itself to prepare for the future.

    Re: Shanghai Surprise

I once went on a trip to Canton, and our guide had a bit of a moan about Shanghai people thinking that Shanghai is the centre of the universe.

I think it must be quite an interesting place culturally though. A lot of jazz musicians went from Japan to Shanghai when jazz was banned under Japanese imperial rule.

Do you want to pay a visit to China before 2008 Olympic Game, Do you hear about Guilin Yangshuo where has the reputation of having the most beautiful landscape under heaven. It is a dream place for many tourists who want to see the real natural landscape and touch the countryside life.

Hilltops pop up from nowhere like trees in the forest and they are shaped like buns, camels, fishes, saw-teeth, horses, etc.  It is a city you must visit or you will miss those beautiful landscape there.  Rivers flow around like green silk ribbons while the hills reveal themselves as jade hair-pins.  Guilin embraces great landscapes like green hills, clear waters, pretty rocks and fantastic caves.

    Re: Shanghai Surprise

Guilin has always been in China for its scenery with historical and cultural relics. It enjoys the reputation that Guilin has the best scenery under heaven.

The scenery of Guilin is unlike that of any other city on Earth. Its peaks rise as suddenly from the Earth as trees in a forest, these craggy peaks and pillars of limestone must have been the models for the traditional landscapes painted for centuries on silk scrolls.
