It's fun, take the kids for a "Day Trip"

Hey gang, after my experience with my kids, on their very first train trip, I have to tell others to give it a try. Both of my boys loved the trip, and the youngest couldn't stop talking about it for weeks afterwards. The trip was long, but that did not douse their excitement at all, that was one of the things they enjoyed. It was also fun for my wife and I, as we were both able to see the things out the window that excited them, since neither of us had to worry about driving......

Thats cool Craztel :) How did you get them interested in the stuff outside? I could imagine using the Eye-Spy books for this kind of thing - with lots of facts about the areas you are passing through, and stuff they have to tick off to get badges?

Actually, my youngest son is full of curiosity, so it wasn't hard to get him to look at items out he window. He's the same way in our van, he just likes to travel. We actually didn't take any type of entertainment with us, as we packed light since we would be walking at our destination......

I've enjoyed the trips I've taken by train over the years.  It was never anything really long,

though... I'm not sure I wouldn't get bored if it would go on hour after hour.  On the other hand,

I like history, so trains have that "special feeling" for me.

I think there is something that kids find especially appealing about trains.  When I was a child I remember fondly riding a train with my mom from Missouri to Georgia.  It was a special trip because it was just the two of us.  We had a lot of fun!

There is a railroad just north of where we live that specifically does day trips.  It's a slow moving train through some scenic country.  I remember going as a child and really enjoying the trip.  I can't wait until my son is old enough to go!

My son didn't like the trip, he thought it was boring and the train moved too slow. He didn't even like the scenery. I tried to get him to like it but it wasn't working.

I can't wait till my daughter is old enough to enjoy and remember a train ride, and then take her back to the UK. I used to make the most beautiful run every two weeks or so from Birmingham to Aberystwyth, through some of the most gorgeous Welsh countryside; mountains, valleys, rivers....... it was amazing.

Maybe that was the case for my son, her wasn't old enough to appreciate the beauty that came with traveling on a train. I might take him again oneday and see how he reacts to it then.

Maybe it would help if you talk to him before hand about what you will be doing, and what a train is-does he like Thomas the Tank Engine at all? That might make it more exciting for the boy.

Actually we went to chucky cheeses and he was in love with this little train set. But he wasn't intrigued by the ride at all. Who knows what the boy is thinking about. We'll try it again oneday.

That way of traveling with the kids is truly relaxing for everyone, not just for the kids either, but more importantly for mom and dad.  Generally, even though it is a vacation, mom or dad get stuck with driving and trying to keep the kids occupied during a long trip.  By going on a train, children are kept occupied by watching the scenery more often than not, thus making it fun and enjoyable for everyone!
