    Anyone been to Budapest?

One place I haven't gotten to visit, but have heard great things about, was Budapest.  Has anyone been there?  How was your experience?

I've heard some people referring to Budapest as the most beautiful city in Europe.  I'd love to hear what others have to say as well.

Yeah, the reason I asked is because when I went on my trip (8 countries) I heard from all my fellow travellers, from everywhere really, that Budapest was one of the places I was really missing out on... I guess I just have to see it for myself to find out.. any idea how much a plane ticket to Budapest costs?  how about if i go a roundabout way with many stops?

Click on the link in my sig to get instant online quotes (for multi-city click on appropriate link once the page loads).  Traveling this summer will be very expensive so I suggest going after Labor Day

Budapest is amazing, go to "Sir Lancelolts" if you go there. It's an old medievil restaurant, they have belly dancers flame jugglers etc and they bring you big platters of meats it's SOOOOO good. The city had good transport and shopping as well!

    Re: Anyone been to Budapest?

I went to Budapest two or three years ago and was completely captivated.  The city has all the sophistication and grateness of an ex-imperial city roughened by war and communist rule.  The wide elegant boulevards, extravagent public gardens and turn-of the-century buildings in the tourist center may distract you from the peeling plaster and bullet holes in other areas. The restless energy is, however, unmistakable.  It's an unusual city as well in terms of mixing architectural styles - sometimes an amalgum of East and West.  You can still visit Turkish bath houses here, and the city is known forits healing waters, partciularly good for arthritis.  You can live it up at night with many fine restaurants to choose from, serving exotic spicey food and live gypsy music.  Get the Budapest Card that gives you a great deal on museums, car rental and public transportation.

Budapest is one of those places where if I had the choice of going there or going to Prague, I'd pick Prague.  While they are both beautiful, Prague is livelier.

I tend to like to travel to places in off-season and Budapest was dismal in winter.  The Danube is really brown and since there aren't so many tourists in winter, alot of things weren't open or the lights weren't on.  Summer was much much better and Budapest comes to life.

It's definitely a city to see at least once and with it's popularity, I would think you'd be able to work out inexpensive ways to do it.

    Re: Anyone been to Budapest?

My aunt and uncle just returned from a river trip through Budapest & Germany.  They said Budapest was magnificent and there was many more interesting places to go than in Germany.  They said it also felt more elegant somehow.  It sounds like a very nice place to visit.
