I have just returned from China. Want to give some advice on the money situation in China. We changed travellers cheques in both US and AUD at Gloria Plaza Hotel’s receptions with no problems (in China the rate of exchange is the same at the hotels and the banks, which is a good thing!). The people on our tour who were using ATM cards seemed to have no problems in the big cities with the Bank of China machines. I took AUD travellers cheques and only had trouble cashing them with the hotels in smaller towns but the Bank of China cashed them for me - no problems! I hope this helps.
