    Belize

Hi all. My husband and I have been batting around the idea of going to Belize for a week or so, and I just wondered if anyone has advice on the following:

What to avoid (food, hotels, restaurants, areas, etc.).
    Absolute "musts" to take along.
Regular sightseeing that is not to be missed.
Nearby sightseeing that isn't the usual touristy stuff.

I like to throw myself into a culture regardless of local "unrest" at times, but with him around I would have two people to watch out for so I would like to avoid anything that is risky in that regard.

    Thanks!

to be honest, i'm not sure that the tourist aspects of belize are particularly attractive from the island itself.  i've been to scuba dive off the coast, but we stayed on the boat b/c of what we could see of the island from the water.  i know there used to be extensive problems there dealing with the trash that was being generated by what tourist economy was present.

Are you going to scuba dive? If not, you might want to consider another destination--like Panama or Costa Rica. They've got much more developed tourist industries and more infrastructure.

Most travelers to Belize go to dive.
