    Passports To Enter US?

I understand that next month people will need a passport to enter the US. I have a passport and I have no plans to enter the US, but I think there may be many Canadians in a crunch because of the rise in demand for passports in the next few weeks.

Is anyone here affected by this or other countries' changing entry requirements?

I'm not from US but I simply understand why passport is needed to enter the country. It's really for security reasons. Hope citizens will understand it. It's for their own benefits. It helps to avoid terrorism.

I belive that only passports do not help to control the crime.

shiningstar meant terrorists, not just regular criminals.  Before, it was very easy for people to enter US especially from Canada or Mexico

I'm astounded anyone could enter the US without a passport at any time.  Could you really?  I mean legally?  Canada is still another country.

    Re: Passports To Enter US?

Just about 8 or 9 years ago, I would drive over the border to get US postage stamps and I'm sure I never took a passport.

Years before that, we sometimes would go across the border to Niagara Falls, US after the Canadian bars closed to get last call in the states, without passports.

    Times change, don't they?

I've never had more than a Driver's License to go to Canada but I did have my Passport when we went to Mexico 3 and 7 (or 8) years ago.

    Re: Passports To Enter US?

I just saw a story on the TV news about people lined up for hours trying to get passports.

In many cases, they won't have them in time for their planned trips because the passport officials can't keep up with the current demand.

I too have been to Mexico without a passport. I only took my birth certificate and US driver's license. Also to many islands...  Now I'll have to get a passport just to visit neighbors. Crying

I think I heard on the weekend that you still won't need a passport to drive into the US from Canada for another year or two.

I'm surprised they differentiate that much between flying and driving.

    Re: Passports To Enter US?

Yes, this is correct.  Current Passport regulations apply only to air travel.  You don't need Passport to enter US from the sea or by car.  But from what I know it only applies to US citizen re-entering US back from Canada, Mexico or Caribbean.

Current Passport regulations makes people a liitle bit panic because of so many adjustments that affects their lives. I think it's only for the first time. Hopefully, people can adapt the changes and consequences of the new regulation.

    Re: Passports To Enter US?

How much warning was given to Canadians / Mexicans that they will be needing a passport from now on to enter the USA? I could imagine this causing caos for a lot of people if they've never had need to get a passport before.
