There’s a tendency among westerners, in particular, to view Africa as just desert and jungle. That’s a false impression of this continent, which in its way is just as varied as many others. Those who think that Africa is uniformly hot should try spending a time in the Atlas mountains of Morocco, or just one night in the Sahara desert – where temperatures can plunge below freezing after the hottest of days. Those who think Africa is barren should visit the green valleys of Tunisia in the north or South Africa, where the Atlantic meets the Indian Ocean. Those who think it is dull should visit Cape Town, Mombasa, Cairo, or Casablanca, take a safari to see the wildlife in the Serengeti, or climb Mt. Kilimanjaro. Africa still has many problems, social and political, but it is still a place of great beauty, full of friendly people.
