Because of its size, it’s difficult to encapsulate Asia in a few short words. Stretching from the Caucasus and the Hellespont in the west to the Pacific coasts of Russia and China in the east, it’s a continent that has everything. From the bustling souks of Turkey and the Middle East to the high peaks of the Himalaya, the endless grass steppes and the frenetic and colorful life of the Pacific Rim, it’s a continent that defies summary. The great Asian cities, from Beijing to Mumbai and Jerusalem, were often the centers of thriving civilizations while Europe was still in the Stone Age and nobody outside its own shores knew about America. This sense of history remains, though throughout Asia you will come across a constant looking-forward to the future, especially in countries like India which lie in the grip of technological and economic revolution. And, of course, there is China: the superpower of tomorrow.
