Grand Bahia Principe Tulum

Cancun, Mexico

Additional Research, Images, Discussions

One of the great things about the Cancun resort area of Mexico is its size: within a half hour to an hour’s drive of Cancun International Airport you can find a hotel or resort to suite every budget or taste.

The Grand Bahia Principe Tulum sits exactly halfway in the middle of that description. It’s just a half hour ride from the airport, half an hour from Carmen Beach and twenty minutes from the town it’s named after, Tulum. In short, it’s one of the best-placed resorts in the Caribbean!

It’s also one of the most beautiful. This is one resort that wasn’t thrown up in a hurry by developers eager for a fast buck. The grounds, entertainment center and two hotels that make up the resort complex were designed by the award-winning Mexican architect Fernando Quirarte. He obviously regarded the resort he was building as being as much a work of art as a place for people to have fun. The main buildings are all designed in classical Mayan styles, allowing you to enjoy the best of Mexican hospitality and cuisine in a uniquely Mexican atmosphere.

The Grand Bahia Principe Tulum is busily perfecting the art of offering true five star luxury at prices that are not out of reach for the mid-range vacationer. This is a five star resort in every sense of the term, but costs are kept manageable by a sensible all-inclusive system with few hidden surcharges. The resort is also one of the leaders in special deals for off-peak times of year.

The accommodation on offer is as lovingly crafted as the resort itself. Standard double rooms have king sized or two large twin beds, and a full range of facilities including phone, satellite TV, and a minibar. Air conditioning comes as standard and all of the resorts en suite bathrooms are finished in fine local marble. If you want a little more space to spread out in, you could book one of The Grand Bahia Principe Tulum’s Junior Suites. Large and spacious, suites feature all the amenities of standard double rooms plus a separate sitting area and a terrace.

Beyond the accommodation, you’ll find that the Grand Bahia Principe Tulum has a lot to offer. This is the perfect place for relaxation: the resort is spread out along almost a mile of fantastic sandy beach. There is, of course, great scope for watersports, and the resort has a dedicated activity center just for those who are determined to get dunked in the ocean while diving, surfing or kayaking. If you want to get wet in a rather more controlled manner, there’s a large irregular-shaped pool for swimming or relaxation. The Grand Bahia Principe Tulum prides itself on being very family friendly, so the pool has a dedicated shallow area of kids to splash around and have fun. There’s also a kids’ club in case you and your little treasures feel like a short break from one another!

Entertainment and activities at The Grand Bahia Principe Tulum aren’t just about jumping in the ocean or lounging by the pool, even though these two activities are superbly catered for. For evening entertainment, among several other alternatives, there’s a large outdoor amphitheater that stages regular shows and entertainments. There’s also a good supply of tennis courts and a fully-equipped gym for those vacationers who want to work up a sweat during their stay (or possibly work off the effects the resorts great restaurants).

On the subject of restaurants, you’re not going to go hungry at The Grand Bahia Principe Tulum, and even the fussiest kids should find something to suit their taste. The largest of the restaurants is the Yucatan, a vast place which serves breakfast lunch and dinner from long buffets containing a variety of world foods – everything from exotic far eastern dishes to homely comfort food. Snacks and salads are available from the beach bars, and, if you feel like going a little more upmarket, you could book a table at Don Pablo, which serves an exquisite a la carte menu cooked to the highest standards of international cuisine. If you want to sample what Mexican chefs arguably do best – traditional Mexican food – then reserve a table at Tequila, at the northern end of the Grand Bahia Principe Tulum. Tequila faces the sea, so you get to enjoy a typical Mexican/Caribbean atmosphere while sampling some of the finest tortillas, burritos and (of course) tequilas that the Yucatan has to offer!

The Grand Bahia Principe Tulum, in so many ways, sets the standards for the luxury vacation resorts of the future. Luxurious without being outrageously expensive, friendly without being chaotic, good fun and family friendly – all resorts should be like this.
